There is More Where That Came From

Sinner's Prayer

My friend and I had a long chat earlier today, catching up on the weekend that was. I love hearing her thoughts on life. She leads a simple sane and satisfied life. The kind where she has time for work, family and fun without apologizing.

The kind I would love to have. And for that, I admire her.

Jealously!

Deep in the chat we realized that some of our close friends have fantastic jobs but are low on family life. They get home late after a long day’s work just to find their kids tucked in bed, and leave before the the babies can say “Good morning”!

At first we thought of their lush lifestyles; the thrilling weekends, gorgeous wardrobes and magnificent homes their jobs afford them. But their complaints about the little time they spend with their children worried us.

Why must they to choose one over the other?
Why can’t they have the best of both worlds?
What can we do to help them?
What can they do for themselves?
What did they do wrong to deserve half the loaf of life?

But then the Holy Spirit pointed out something He brought to my mind during devotion last week.

You see, I love writing; it gives me lots of satisfaction. However, I have not been able to write a book for myself since early last year. I would not want to claim writer’s block because I ghostwrote several books for my clients after writing my own.

So the block was off the list.

Just Ask Dad

I chose to speak to my Father about it. “Isn’t there another book inside me that I can write for my audience?” I agonized in prayer. “Are my 3 books all there is inside me?”

I shared this story with my friend. Yet again the Holy Spirit pointed out a familiar story.

Remember Esau?
When Jacob his brother, got the birthright and blessings Esau deserved, the hairy hunter didn’t settle. He pleaded for a blessing.

“And Esau said to his father, “Have you only one blessing, my father? Bless me — me also, O my father!” And Esau lifted up his voice and wept.”
(Genesis 27:38 NKJV)

Dad’s Answer

Dad’s words

You see, it is so easy to justify the long hours of work in the name of the furnishing the family. Many people do so. I did so when I was younger. And I still do it.

But look closely. Esau realized that the blessing he deserved had gone to his twin brother. Instead of shrugging it off and settling for his hunting life, or even retort, “But what can a hunter do?” He decided to hunt for it.

He chose to have the best of both worlds and implored Isaac, his father for a blessing. And he got it!

Then Isaac his father answered and said to him:
“Behold, your dwelling shall be of the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above. By your sword you shall live, and you shall serve your brother; And it shall come to pass, when you become restless, that you shall break his yoke from your neck.”
(Genesis 27: 39–40 NKJV)

You see, there is more where the first came from.

Look, I understand the splendid job is a blessing in itself. So is the family. However, you do not have to give up one for the other.

So, how about you ask the Father today for a job that will allow you enjoy time with your family every evening after work?

Or do you think He has only one blessing for you?

Sinner's Prayer

It took admitting that I am the rotten apple in the basket to let God in and help me change my life. May 10, 2021. Walk with me.
